UAC releases latest ATAR report one week out from 2019 ATARs

A new report by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) shows that the ATAR is a better predictor of success at university than performance in individual HSC subjects.

The report, ‘The Effectiveness and Limitations of the ATAR’ supports previous research that the ATAR is an excellent predictor of success at university, as measured by first year GPA.

‘It is the best single indicator of preparedness for university that we have and it has the additional advantage of efficiency and equity,’ says UAC General Manager of Marketing and Engagement, Kim Paino.

'What we need in the ATAR debate is some balance. While the ATAR is useful and important, it's not everything either. It doesn’t account for student disadvantage, ambition, passion or interest. It’s not meant for employers or anyone other than university admission teams,' she said.

More than 55,000 NSW HSC students will be able to access their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) from 1pm next Tuesday 17 December. 

Students can access their ATAR on the My UAC mobile app or on UAC’s website. They’ll need their Year 12 student number (or UAC application number) and their UAC PIN, so we advise students to make sure they have those numbers ready.

Students with questions about their ATAR can call UAC’s ATAR Enquiry Centre on 1300 MY ATAR (1300 692 827), (02) 9119 5012 from mobiles, or +61 2 9119 5012 from overseas, on the following days:

• Tuesday 17 December 2019, 12pm–8pm
• Wednesday 18 December 2019, 8.30am–4.30pm
• Thursday 19 December 2019, 8.30am–4.30pm
• Friday 20 December 2019, 8.30am–4.30pm.

Students can change their preferences for the December Round 2 offers until midnight on Thursday 19 December. December Round 2 offers are released at 7.30am on Monday 23 December 2019.

For those who haven’t applied, it’s not too late – applications for university study in first semester 2020 are open until Friday 7 February 2020.
